The Authors’ Shelf: Liz Meldon

Liz Meldon is a Canadian author who grew up in the Middle East. She has a degree in Bioarchaeology from Western University, and when she isn’t writing about her own snarky characters, she is ghostwriting romance novellas, loitering on social media, or taking care of her many animals.

As a freelance ghostwriter, she has written sixteen books, which range from romance to horror, full-length to novella-sized. A handful are currently on the market, and she stalks their “authors” with fiendish delight. She loves writing realistic characters in fantastical settings.

What made you want to write?

I was always a pretty creative kid, but I started writing fanfiction after I moved overseas. Sixth grade, new kid, new school—I went to the internet while I slowly made new friends. Eventually, I happened upon Quizilla, thought I could write cool fanfiction too, and BAM. I loved it. It was a huge confidence booster for an insecure preteen, and it eventually became the thing that always makes me happy.

What is your favourite book to date?

Ugh that’s so tough, because all my 5-star reviews are books I’d love to scream-promote from the rooftops. But, I’d have to say Carrie by Stephen King is one of my all-time faves.

What was your favourite book growing up?

In elementary school, we went to the library every week, and in third or fourth grade, I literally took out the same book for a year. It was a fiction in the “older” kids section, and while I can’t remember the name, I know it was about a lost husky puppy who joined a wolf pack and became a recognized member through hardship and proving himself. I was obsessed with wolves, and I used to only take out wolf related books from the non-fiction section. Then I happened upon that beauty when a teacher forced me to look at fiction, and the rest was history. I wish I could remember the name!

Your first book: where were you when the idea came to you?

Lovers and Liars—my first paranormal romance serial! I was waiting for the bus to go to the day job. There was a lot of snow on the ground, as I was pacing back and forth through it coming up with the series concept. At that point, I’d written a lot of fanfiction, and I was looking for a way to make the transition to more original works.

Where is your ideal writing space?

It used to be in bed, but then I totally ruined it for myself by slouching and having terrible writing posture for years. Now, ideally, writing is at my ergonomic desk set-up with my wrist braces.

Which author(s) inspire you?

Any author who I see as a better writer than me inspires me. I’m constantly on the hunt for people who are stronger storytellers and better wordsmiths. They make me step up my game.

If you were to go to any library or bookstore in the world, where would you go?

Bali? But mostly because I want to go to Bali. Heh. Books on the beach with no people around? Dream vacation.

If you were to find someone reading your book anywhere, where would it be?

My stuff tends to have a bit of heat to it—so probably not in public. I’d like to imagine my readers curled up on a rainy day, with a blanket and some hot chocolate, enjoying my book babies during some much needed downtime.

What do you love about reading and/or writing the most?

I love creating and losing myself in my own little worlds. I’m an actress and worldbuilder at heart, but also an introvert and a bit of a control freak—writing allows me to indulge every side of myself unabashedly. I can’t imagine life without it.
